The Rita and Samuel Brodie Adult Medical Day Center located on the campus of Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute offers two distinct day programs for seniors living in the community. Both the main day center program and the specialized day program for Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders are designed to offer families and clients alternatives which allow them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible while meeting the specific needs of these distinct groups. Established in 1975, the adult medical day program was the first center of its kind in the state of New Jersey and continues to provide innovative programming for over 60 clients daily.
Main Day Center Program
The primary objectives of the Rita & Samuel Brodie Adult Medical Day Center are to improve clients' daily lives by delivering quality health care; to maintain self-sufficiency as long as possible; to prevent premature institutionalization; and to provide respite, education and emotional support to family caregivers.
Clients from the surrounding communities of Clifton, Passaic, Paterson and Fair Lawn are transported to the Medical Day Center in handicap accessible vans. A continental breakfast begins the five hour-a-day program where the emphasis is on wellness. Professional staff have created a schedule of social, recreational and educational activities which promote physical well-being, cognitive stimulation, and social interaction. A day in the Rita & Samuel Brodie Adult Medical Day Center may include therapeutic movement and music, arts and crafts, current events discussions or reminiscence groups. Special events such as intergenerational activities, educational seminars and trips are also planned to keep clients engaged and active. Clients of the day center also participate in work therapy though the Center’s sheltered workshop.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Program
In conjunction with the Rita and Samuel Brodie Adult Medical Day Center, a specialized day care program was created to provide care for persons living in the community who suffer from Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. A total of 20 clients per day are served by this program where structured activities are designed to maintain the physical and mental health of clients suffering from cognitive loss.

Daily exercise and music groups, sensory stimulation and activities of daily living classes are conducted. In addition, medication is administered and support groups and family counseling are all offered to strengthen the family unit.
