The Brawer Building, also known as Miriam Apartments I, offers seniors independent living with supportive services to help them maintain an active lifestyle.  Located on the campus of Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute, the Brawer Building consists of 106 studio apartments and 14 one-bedroom apartments.

Each apartment has its own kitchenette for the tenant who wishes to prepare their own meals.  A call bell system connects tenants with the administrative offices and brings immediate help in the event of an emergency.  Designed with the specialized needs of seniors in mind, bathrooms are equipped with grab bars and low-walled tubs for ease and security while bathing and easy grip faucets assist those suffering from joint pain.  Large closets provide ample storage space.  Other features include 24-hour security and optional weekly maid and linen service.

The Brawer Building participates in Section 8 of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) thereby entitling qualified individuals for federal subsidies through the HUD Section 8 program.  In addition, utilities (electricity, gas and water) are included in the rent.

Tenants enjoy the privacy of their own apartment, while being afforded a wide array of optional services. A special Shabbat elevator allows observant Jews to move freely throughout the building on the Sabbath avoiding the need to use the stairs.

A full-time social worker serves as the service coordinator.  She is available to counsel the tenants, serve as a community liaison and coordinate community services.  Optional services include a full-time nurse who offers health care counseling, coordinates on-site community physician and podiatric services and responds to tenant emergencies.

A structured schedule of activities is designed to engage tenants’ interests, including current event discussions, exercise classes or arts and crafts.  Also included in the service package is the use of the regularly scheduled shopping to the market and the mall as well as trips to local restaurants, museums, and the movies.  A neighborhood network allows tenants to surf the internet and check email enabling them to keep in touch with friends and family members.  A sweeping view of the Manhattan skyline adds a special touch to activities and informal gatherings in the seventh floor lounge.

Tenants also take advantage of the multi-media center in the Marcus Auditorium of the Rothenberg Building for screenings of first-run movies and live performances presented by various groups ranging from local school students to world class classical and jazz musicians.

In addition to the services provided within the Brawer Building, all of the clinical services of the skilled nursing facility are available to tenants including short- term rehabilitation care, physical and occupational therapy and vision care.
